The 2009 Aiken Polo Magazine Cover

Aiken Polo Magazine 2009Yes, it is really a photograph.

The 2009 cover shows Craig Fraser, the Aiken Polo Club manager, in full swing on Aiken's Powder House Field.

How was it done? Gary Knoll set up his camera and lights at Powder House one evening. He used halogen lights to improve the focus and a large soft box external flash. Then Craig rode back and forth, swinging his mallet at an imaginary ball. (Cameras are expensive and many of the Craig's shots would have been quite dangerous!) It did take several hours to accomplish the shot. At first it was too bright. But then the sun set behind the trees and the sky darkened dramatically. Game on!
